Norfolk Classic Stage Race - Day 2

Norfolk, NE

August 6, 2006
By Sean Weide

The FinishLynx photo shows just how close the finish was between Team Kaos' Tim Farnham (foreground) and Lincoln Plating Lemond's Jon Randall.

The lure of taking home $110 in cash likely cost Lincoln Plating-Lemond's Jon Randall the chance of winning all three stages at the inaugural Norfolk Classic.

The "gambler's prime" went to the first rider across the line with one lap remaining in Sunday's 75-minute Pro-I-II criterium in downtown Norfolk. Randall pipped Team Kaos' Tim Farnham to win the cash, only to lose the last-lap sprint by nearly the same margin - about an inch.

Even without the criterium win, Randall easily took home the overall victory with a one minute and 16 second cushion after more than five hours of racing in the two-day, three-stage race in Northeast Nebraska.

"I was really concerned coming into today's race because Team Kaos had three really strong guys," Randall said. "You've got to give them credit. They weren't just going for the stage win today. They were out to get the whole GC (general classification)."

Indeed, Team Kaos came into the final stage holding onto second, third and fourth place overall, with Marco Vasquez only 28 seconds behind Randall. Intent on making up that deficit, Team Kaos riders continually kept the pace high while going on the attack. But the strategy went south when Vasquez and Robertson (third overall) crashed, along with two others. The pair was able to continue - but at a much slower pace - allowing Farnham to leapfrog both of them in the overall standings to finish as the race's runner-up.

"I didn't know what to do," Farnham said of the crash. "I know Ian has gone down before and he has problems with his knees, so I didn't know if he was going to be able to continue."

Randall, who lost teammate Michael Munson to injured ribs in the crash, credited his other teammate in the race, Marc Walter, for helping preserve his overall lead.

"It was awesome what Marc did," Randall said. "At first, I didn't know if he was one of the guys who went down. But then he bridged up to us (after getting caught behind the crash) and went right to the front and dragged us around."

Farnham said he "felt horrible" moving ahead of his teammates because of the crash. After it was apparent Vasquez and Robertson would not be able to stay with the pack, Farnham said he was content to go for the stage win. Not only did he get it, he also took home a $600 Nirve classic cruise bike, courtesy of one of the race sponsors, Andrew Bicycle & Fitness.

The Category III race was not decided until the final lap of the 60-minute criterium. Team Kaos' Mark Brackenbury held a nine-second advantage over GP Velotek's Jack Mason in the overall standings, but the race winner could claim a 10-second time bonus.

"I knew I'd just have to sit on his wheel and watch his every move and make sure he didn't get the time bonus in the end," Brackenbury said.

But Brackenbury got an unexpected gift when Mason's GP Velotek teammate, Kurtis Albrecht, soloed off the front early on and went on to lap the field.

"When he (Albrecht) stayed away, that was good for me because he took the 10-second time bonus away," Brackenbury said.

Mason finished third in the criterium to grab a five-second time bonus but Brackenbury crossed the line with the pack to earn the overall crown by four seconds. Troy Krause of Slimenundgrossen/Trek of KC was third, 1:15 behind Brackenbury.

"This race was very well run and very impressive for a first-year event," Brackenbury. "The promoters did a great job of securing a great venue for the criterium. It's a shame more people weren't here. They missed a good event."

Hometown favorite Morgan Chaffin of Team Kaos sealed her victory in the women's open category with a win in the 45-minute criterium. Chaffin, the reigning Nebraska criterium and time trial champion, took the overall by more than six minutes over Monkey Wrench's Sydney Brown. Chaffin's teammate, Marie Neville, was third overall.

"Today, I just wanted to help Marie and see what we could do as a team," Chaffin said.

In the Category IV race, Jeff Bergen soloed off the front to snatch a 10-second time bonus and win by 12 seconds, overtaking first-day leader Tom Peddicord of KCOI Boulevard. Peddicord wound up seven seconds behind Bergen in the overall standings, while Don Raskey (Trek of KC/localcycling.com) placed third.

Fred Galata of Omaha Velo Club won the Masters 55+ division, sweeping all three races. Brett Linn of Powerade-Independent Fabrication won the time trial and the road race on the way to capturing the Masters 45+ division. And in his first race, Mark Wilcox (Road Booty) won the juniors 15-16 category.
